Shining in the east, beyond them far;
And to the earth it gave great light,
And so it continued both day and night.

In quella fredda notte in pieno inverno l’angelo chiamò per primi i poveri pastori,
che sdraiati nei campi, custodivano le loro greggi.
Adesso è il tempo della gioia, è nato il re d’Israele.

Guardarono in alto e videro una stella che brillava lontano ad Oriente,
che illuminava con grande luce la terra. La stella indicava il luogo dove riposava Gesù.

E lì entrarono i Re Magi e si inginocchiarono pieni di riverenza offrendo alla sua presenza oro, mirra e incenso.

The first Nowell (o anche: The first Noel = “Il primo Natale”) è un tradizionale canto natalizio inglese, originario probabilmente della Cornovaglia e databile tra il XVI e il XVII secolo (ma forse anche più antico), che venne pubblicato per la prima volta nel 1823 con un arrangiamento ed aggiunte nel testo ad opera di Davies Gilbert nella raccolta "Some Ancient Christmas Carols", curata da William B. Sandys.
